2010 was clearly an interesting one for golf writers. It was a year that displayed, like never before, the divergent appetites for news about Tiger Woods.
Early in the beleaguered champion's "annus horribilis", golf media outlets... large and small... formulated their strategies.
There were those who saw it as the perfect time for a segue into TMZ territory...

"Only Two Things" - 2010: The Year in Golf & Sex
Back in early June we aired our first episode of "Only Two Things".
Our inspiration was one of golf's most popular quotes:
"Golf and sex are the only things you can enjoy without being good at them."
Our formula was a half hour review of the week in golf, followed by a half hour discussion of a "Mars/Venus" topic of the day . Over the ensuing weeks we covered some controversial topics..

Bunker Boost at Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship
.
When the world’s top golfers convene at Abu Dhabi Golf Club for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship next month, they'll be greeted by five unique new bunkers on The National Course.
The bunkers, which protect holes 2, 5, 6, 13 and 17, feature the kind of steep faces and well-defined lips that will require players to adapt their games and "think long and hard about club selection.”

Musings of a Golf Newbie - Golf ≠ Boring

There they were the first pair of brothers AND the first Italians to ever win the event. Then there was Accenture Match Play in February, where they became the first set of brothers to take part in a World Golf

Playmate Shannon James on the Art of the Golf Hookup
Shannon James is one of Playboy's most popular playmates; a brown-eyed platinum blonde with a stunning... smile. Among other attributes. As hostess at the Playboy Golf events that take place all over the country, this playmate spends quite a bit of time on the golf course. And in Playboy.com's popular column, The Hookup, she recently offered advice to golf guys on how to best link up with ladies

David Williams Solves Golf Memorabilia Mystery
My compliments to David Williams of Willow Golf in Melbourne, Australia. His response was the last one to come in today, and... he got it right. ~ The dainty looking object of mint green glass... with the tiny duffer on top... is actually a lighter that dates back to golf's golden age. There were many valiant attempts to identify the odd little item, but in the end, Mr. Williams' answer was the
The Mystery Deepens Around an Enigmatic Golf Item
NightLight, lamp, music box, egg-warmer, thimble, electric jello mold, snuff box, heater, radio, buzzer, envelope sealer. All good guesses but not one of them is correct. Or even that close. So I've posted another view of the enigmatic item. I'll also give you a couple of hints: * To clarify scale, the perforated circular inset shown above on the bottom of the piece is about the size of a nickel.

Golf Memorabilia: Rare & Wonderful, but What is It?
According to the experts this little item is probably from the twenties. It's made out of green jadeite, in an art deco style and yes that's a golfer on the top, made of base metal with remnants of silverplate. It is electric, and in full working condition. But what does it do?

Only Two Things - Do Guys Care What They Wear?
You've probably seen them at your course: Dowdy Dan and Sloppy Sam. Lumpy Larry and Baggy Bill will often round out the unfashionable foursome. The clothes they wear are classic... but not in the good sense. No... I mean in the unimaginative, oversize sense... that such men swear by. Muted colors, conservative cuts... outfits that look like afterthoughts. Meanwhile, many/most lady golfers dress

Did Journalists Inspire Obama Golf Style Makeover?
One of the more divisive dress code issues in golf is the one that involves cargo shorts; the enormously popular, sometimes voluminous, multi-pocketed shorts that first appeared on the fashion scene in the early 90s. Cargo shorts can be worn in varying lengths but are distinguished by the quantity and capacity of their pockets. Early on the look was almost exclusively associated with Fratboy
Arjun Atwal Win Adds to Golf Globalization Story
Early this year I wrote about the Avantha Masters, a € 1.5 million tournament, tri-sanctioned between the European Tour, the Asian Tour and the Professional Golf Tour of India. At that time many were pointing to it as evidence of the growing strength of the Asian Tour... and the increasing role India might play in it.India has tended to go somewhat "under the radar" on the Global Golf scene, when

Birdies & Bunnies & Tillinghast: Playboy Scramble NY
Let's say you love golf, but you've grown a bit weary of the ongoing Dustin Johnson/Whistling Straits story... and you don't quite feel ready to tackle that 82-page volume called, "The Rules of Golf". Perhaps it's the perfect time to consider a... lighter, less draconian... kind of golf event. I'm talking about the Playboy Scramble, said by many to be the worlds most unique and exciting golf

A Final Thought - Was Dustin Johnson Just too Cool?
When what's now come to be called "Bunker-Gate" went down... on the 18th hole at Whistling Straits a few days ago... there was something that immediately occurred to me. It's something that hasn't really been discussed, but I think it was illustrated... to a degree... in a recent post by the intrepid and engaging Stephanie Wei at Wei Under Par. Here's what I'm talking about: it seems there's a

Golfer Wins a Million at Zo's Million Dollar Shootout (updated)
It was an awesome event... made even more so by the fact that there was a winner! Alonzo Mourning's 7th annual Million Dollar Shootout took place today at the spectacular Trump National Golf Course... where on the par-three 13th, one player managed a hole in one... winning a cool million. I'm uploading some video and will have more for you tomorrow.Update: Check out some more of my photos from
The PGA Championship, Martin Kaymer & German Golf
When Martin Kaymer won the Abu Dhabi Championship in mid-January, he called his final round 6-under 66, "The nicest round of golf I have ever played on the European Tour.”
While he probably wouldn't call yesterday's contentious conclusion to PGA Championship "nice", he did emerge as the winner... of a major championship... and Germany's first potential successor to Bernhard Langer's golf glory.

Zo's Million Dollar Shootout - 1 Day, 1 Shot, 1 Million
OK, How could this be anything but awesome? By being beyond awesome. ~ That would be my only guess. Zo's Million Dollar Shootout will take place on August 16 and it'll certainly be wonderful, because when it comes to hosting charity golf tournaments, Alonzo Mourning is as good as it gets. The seven-time NBA All-Star hosts several such events each year benefiting his Alonzo Mourning Charities. A
GolfStinks - One Year of Unorthodox Golf Insight
I'm notoriously bad with birthdays but occasionally I manage to catch one before it's too late. To that end, I want wish a Happy 1st to guys at GolfStinks. These days new golf blogs come and go like the wind on a coastal course, so a full year of consistently clever posts... at regular intervals... is something of an accomplishment. And when the posts are written in a voice I can relate to... ie.
Women on Course - A Great Way to Get Into Golf
As a passionate recreational golfer who always (seriously... always) has a great time on the golf course, I'm surprised at how often women tell me they hate the game. Upon further questioning it usually turns out that they've had "an experience"... on a golf course or at a golf center... that's made them uncomfortable. So uncomfortable that they've decided the benefits of the game... fresh air,

Golf Grows in Brooklyn - A Clinic with Cristie Kerr
Though the PGA of America was founded in New York City most don't think of the Big Apple as a golf town. In fact, for a time the city's public courses had been the subject of ridicule. Greens were frequently bumpy and burned out.Changes came in 1983 when the Department of Parks and Recreation turned golf course operation over to

Only Two Things - Of Red Tees and Big Egos
This is a topic I've written about before: Playing from the ladie's tees... red tees... front tees. As I wrote last year, there seems to be an invisible emasculation demarcation line on American golf courses that men know not to cross. It varies depending on the number of tee boxes, but there's never any question about where it lies... and if a man crosses it, he may as well be playing golf in a

Golf Course Streakers Use Velcro for Quick Stripping
Some called it a yawn... others labeled it a snooze fest. In both cases the implication was that the runaway win of affable, understated Louis Oosthuizen, made the 2010 Open Championship about as exciting as a slo-mo game of Shuckle. However, what few realized was that the potential for mayhem was, in fact there, lurking among the friendly faces of avid golf fans in the galleries of the Old Course

Women's Golf Equipment - Athletic vs Aesthetic
Tonight's show may deal with equipment, but it's actually about much more than that. You see, a couple of weeks ago I happened to be artfully procrastinating diligently networking on Twitter and caught a conversational snippet that intrigued me. For Bernhard Langer, Global Golf is Second Nature
Winning two majors... back-to-back... is an extraordinary feat in and of itself, but throw an ocean, a continent, and an eight hour time difference between them and it becomes a once-in-history achievement. This is a touchy one. The Men's Grill, that bastion that exists at many clubs... it's often a bar/casual dining establishment... it may involve cigars and/or cards and/or a big screen TV or two. The common denominator however is that women are not permitted inside. Au Revoir Evian, a l'Année Prochaine.... Bisous!
I'm always sad to see the Evian Masters end. Falling as it does in late July, I tend associate the end of the tournament with the beginning of the end of summer. While multiple layers were being worn by many at the Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews, it was a far different story half way around the world in Cincinnati, OH. Massive Win for Cristie Kerr at the LPGA Championship

Just before going into the final round at the 2010 US Open, Gregory Havret updated his facebook status: "merci a tous.. sincerement, je ne sais pas trop a quoi m attendre, ce qui est sur c est que je me donnerai comme jamais jusqu au dernier shot, j espere vs faire vibrer autant que je vibre!! bises"In other words; "Thank you everyone. 2010 US Open - Tiger Woods Brings Electrifying Back
It had been six months since the Tiger Woods accident and ensuing Tiger Woods Scandal... yet we were still waiting for the Tiger Woods return. And while... in the scheme of things... a half a year isn't long at all, this did feel long. ~ OK, it felt endless. To the extent that some had forgotten what it was like for golf to be electrifying. It was heartwarming when Phil Mickelson won the Masters

Rafael Cabrera-Bello & His Amazing US Open Adventure
When I saw the Spanish flag up towards the top of the leaderboard yesterday I didn't immediately think of Rafael Cabrera-Bello. You probably didn't either. Of all the Spaniards in the field he's probably the least known on these shores... and he hasn't really been playing all that well lately. To say the least.Jason Sobel broke it down with this succinct analysis: "Mired in a poor European Tour

Ryo Ishikawa Shines at Pebble in Bubblegum Pink
Of my five unconventional eclectic and quirky US Open picks it was Ryo Ishikawa who fared best in round one... and on so many levels. His game was superlative and his outfit was over-the-top... in a good way. The implausibly young Japanese champion, playing in his first ever US Open, finished just one back and wore and outfit took pink to a whole new level. Of course there were the inevitable
Golf on the Other Coast - The ShopRite LPGA Classic
If you're reading this you've probably spent at least some of the day watching familiar men navigate the dramatic Pacific Coast terrain of Pebble Beach Golf Links. A US Open in an iconic local: for many golf fans it doesn't get better. However, on the opposite side of the country, at Seaview Golf Course... and the ladies of the LPGA who are getting ready to play. My Unconventional, Eclectic & Quirky US Open Picks
Tim Clark - I've been a fan of the tenacious South African for a while now, but I never knew he had a posse till I met the awesome Reluctant Jam Boy and he hooked me up with Tim Clark's Posse. I put my Tim Clark posse shirt on last night in support of my first U.E.& Q. pick. Some were skeptical but the way I see it Tim played Pebble Beach in 6 under during the AT&T in February and he's second

Only Two Things - Live from the Jersey Shore
As we always do on "Only Two Things", tonight at 9:30PM ET, we'll be talking Golf and Sex, but this week I'll be broadcasting from Atlantic City, New Jersey where I'm spending a few days at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Our provocative topic suggested by Brenda from Bryn Mawr, PA: "Are golfer's more likely than non-golfers to be unfaithful?" In her email Brenda explained that the thought occurred to
Hilton Head - Where Golf & Beach Coexist Happily
... and when I say beach, I'm not referring to that biggreen side bunker. I'm talking about the kind that line the shore welcoming swimmers and sunbathers... and castle builders of all ages. ~ To be able to find beaches like that side-by-side with top golf courses is about as good as it gets. That's the first thing I thought about when I checked out some photos of Palmetto Dunes and other Hilton

Golf on the Jersey Shore at the ShopRite LPGA Classic
While others take in the sights and sounds of the Pacific at Pebble Beach, I'm heading down to the Jersey Shore for the ShopRite LPGA Classic. NOT looking forward to the 4 hour drive, but oh well. Anyway, stop back here a bit later today for a first report from the scene. In the meantime checkout the tournament website and facebook page. You can also follow them on Twitter.

Weather is something professional golfers are used to dealing with. In fact, the ability to handle various climatic conditions is one of the skills that defines a top player and contributes to the consistency every golfer strives for.Cristie Kerr has been more successful than most in achieving it. Cristie Kerr - Going for the Win & Giving to Her Cause
Cristie Kerr currently holds the lead as the third round continues into the fourth day at the LPGA State Farm Classic. As I write this she's among twenty players yet to finish the third after it was delayed, interrupted and finally suspended by yesterday's capricious weather. Cristie was pragmatic about the suspension that interrupted her stellar start yesterday... she opened with an eagle on the
Foxy Lola Taco - State Farm Scene Stealer
What could be better... on a rainy day... than cuddling with a soft, sweet puppy? You're right, nothing. So... not surprisingly,,, out in Springfield, IL a tiny, fox-like canine who goes by the name of Lola Taco is currently in high demand. She was presented to the world earlier on Black Flamingo by proud momMichelle Wie, who brought little Lola with her to this week's LPGA State Farm Classic.

Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge - Different Perspectives
A couple of months ago, when the five finalists for the 2010 Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge were introduced, I was among the many who applauded the selection. ~ One of the things I liked about these contestants... each of whom played at a very high level... was that they were so different from one another. ~ Whereas one year earlier the finalists had been practically indistinguishable... and

Brattleboro Country Club - Green Mountain Golf
With the Green Mountains as a backdrop, Brattleboro Country Club offers so many panoramic views and scenic woodland vistas that one could conceivably cry "distraction by dreamy landscape" for any errant shots or mishit drives. I did. Several times.
It's the kind of classic woodland track that undulates across sloping meadows, then winds through picturesque pine groves and into forest clearings.
A Golfer's Hidden Gem in Southeastern Vermont
In an economy that's still somewhat shaky, those dreams of far-flung golf destinations may have to remain on hold for a bit longer. But if you're the type of golfer who likes to explore 18 in a new setting from time to time, you're probably trying courses within a given radius... and just hoping for the best. This method doesn't always yield the desired result. I know because some of the courses

Justin Rose - The Old, Young Gun Who Won
The years go by really quickly when you get past a certain age. From about 18 onward they start blending into one another, and before you know it a decade has flown by. ~ Then, as some of us know all too well, the pace really picks up. I took the photos here almost exactly two years ago but... cliche alert... it seems like only yesterday. For me it seems like yesterday. For Justin Rose, who was
Brendon de Jonge is Awesome & Not Scared of Food
There appears to be a growing obsession with weight on the PGA Tour, or at least among the golf scribes who cover it.It was brought to light a couple of weeks ago when Mark Calcavechia announced his retirement and was given a journalistic good riddance for having perpetuated the stereotype of the overweight golfer. The Weight Debate - Are Portly Players Bad for Golf?

Golf Icon Se Ri Pak - Back in the Winner's Circle
A win at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic today, brought Stylish Se Ri Pak back to the once familiar world of winners. Sex and The City, Golf Guys & Little White Balls
Remember how awesome "Sex and the City" was back when? I'm talking about the early years, when it was an HBO series and actually somewhat ground breaking. The time and place were special. Tim Clark Turns Tables - Wins Players Championship
A few months ago Tim Clark was roundly castigated, by golf scribblers and message-board minions, when an ill-fated lay up went awry. It was the par-5 finishing hole at the Bob Hope Classic. Italian Golf: Molinari, Manassero and Alberto Binaghi
I've got to admit it, up until recently the only kind of golf I associated with Italy was Beach Golf, a game (event? party?) played on Italian beaches by beautiful people in swimwear. Sandra Gal's Shorts & The Lady in The Locker Room
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about country club dress codes.
It was inspired by an unfortunate aquatic incident that took place at the Kia Classic, when Michelle Wie lost her balance while trying to hit her ball from a water hazard. The Return of Tiger and The Hollywood Ending
The 2010 Masters could have turned out a lot of ways. Think back just one week, to last Sunday night... when it was anyone's guess. Kraft Nabisco 2010 - Of Barbie Swings and Easter Balls
.Suzanne P. went bogey free... and took the first round lead at The Kraft Nabisco Championship. ...And the first major of the season is underway for the Ladies of the LPGA Tour. It hardly seems a year ago that Brittany Lincicome won in Rancho Mirage with that amazing final hole eagle, and if this year turns out to be even half as exciting as last year... it's going to be a fun weekend. There are

The Long & the Short of the Golf Skirt & Skort
.At many country clubs the rules on skirt length are quite clear. As in: "Skirts must be no greater than 4 inches above the middle of the kneecap" or how about: "Skirts/skorts must measure at least fourteen (14) inches from the waistband to the bottom of the skort and to within a scorecard width measure or four (4) inches of the top of the knee". OK...gulp. While not all dress code directives

Sergio Garcia shares the kind of intimate details fans love to hear... but don't often get from athletes or actors. ~ He posts lots of photos too... snapshots actually, the kind we all take these days.

Stylish Seo Wins at The Kia Classic by J Golf
.Hee Kyung Seo is trying to decide: Should she grab the chance to join the LPGA full time in 2010, or just keep focused on the KLPGA?After winning The Kia Classic yesterday with a 12-under 276, that decision has become somewhat more pressing. She even suggested there was a house on the course at La Costa she had her eye on. She played on a sponsor's exemption there and won quite handily. And {

Bold, Blonde Golf Blogger Stealthily Stalks John Daly
.Heather Jones, for those of you who don't know, is a mid-western Mom and editor of the popular blog Real Women Golf. She's resplendently blonde and beautiful... and though she's been playing for less than five years she's already flirting with a single digit handicap. Let's face it, as a raven-haired, wannabe blonde... who's handicap hovers around 25... I might be tempted to... you know... hate
Front Row Experience - Swing With the LPGA Stars
.If you're like me, one of the things you love about golf tournaments is watching the players practice. Whether it's the methodical drills on the putting green or the impressive swing-tuning on the practice range, I find it fascinating to observe the multitude of techniques players and their coaches use and... I'll admit it... I've gleaned quite a few insights (golf and gossip) through artful

Ryo Ishikawa in the Awesomest Golf Outfit... Ever!
.I know, I know... he always wears awesome outfits but this one, well... this outfit pushes wow-factor to sizzling new heights. His bubblegum pants and matching belt are perfectly complemented by the variegated vibrancy of his golf shirt. All Yonex all the time. I'm not much of a visor fan but no one wears a visor like Ryo. Oh, except for his Ryo Ishikawa headcover. My good friend Greg Moore

A Trip to the 2010 Masters... is Still Within Reach
.It's going to be a Masters to remember. The much anticipated return of a prodigal player will ensure that. Of course everyone and his brother wants to go. Tiger Woods Puts a Bit More of the Past Behind Him
.A gradual return to normalcy is what Tiger Woods seems to be hoping for. Not that his life was ever normal by average standards... and that's probably part of why things got... shall we say... totally out of hand... for a while there. A childhood spent on a singular path toward greatness, certainly must have isolated the aspiring young golf champion. I don't think it's unrealistic to imagine

Male Sports Scribbler Sees Sexism in Tiger's Comeback
.It's been ten rumor-filled weeks since the Tiger Woods Scandal broke, and you know what I'm getting really tired of? Guys chastising Tiger for cheating. ...In fact, it's starting to annoy me. Big time. Probably because the consternation is frequently followed by a self-congratulatory segue into how they've never cheated on their spouse. ~ As I've said numerous times since Thanksgiving, I'd far
Tiger's Return & The Awesomeness of Angel Cabrera
From the moment speculation began that Tiger might be making his return at the Masters, there were those who lamented the possibility. The sanctimonious have suggested that repentance requires more than a few months, while expounding on the evils of adultery, while some players have implied that an Augusta comeback might hurt the hallowed tournament by turning it into a Tiger-centric, tabloid

Enviable Assets : Sophie Sandolo's Golf and Glamour
Here in the US, many know Sophie Sandolo from Big Break Kaanapali. Others are admirers of her calendars which have featured elegant, erotic photography... and liberal amounts of artful nudity, since 2005, years before the arrival of the ESPN Magazine "body issue". I wrote about Sophie back in December of 2007. She had just published her 2008 calendar and was again ahead of the curve. She had
